Simmer Down

I had intended this blog to be for family and friends - I began blogging during my trip to Korea, as a way to keep my loved ones informed of my adventures. I found I enjoyed it and it was a good outlet for me. On my last day of work it was brought to my attention that this blog had been discovered by management. I was saddened that people I trusted felt it appropriate to share and sad that it was being taken so seriously. I opted not to post about it at the time because I didn't want to burn any bridges.

Today I was politely declined for a temp gig based on my blog... it's not a big deal, I think the position requirements have changed since it was first mentioned to me and it's probably true that it's not a perfect fit. But I find it sad that so much is being read into this blog (ha, no pun intended). Reading a blog can be like reading a diary - a voyeuristic view of someone else's life and as such, should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, just because I say I want to kill someone at Fred Meyer doesn't mean I'm going to do it.

As far as my time with my last employer, for those of you lurking, I would like to put it on the record that I love that company and I had some great times there. When I was hired I figured I was going to be in that role for 2 years, max. I stayed for 5 because I loved the company and my coworkers so much. I have no doubt that someday it will return to being the great place to work it once was and if I could have stayed and moved into another role I would have. I just didn't see a future for me in that particular job. So please, don't feel that any of the things I have said on here are more than the mutterings of someone blowing off steam and please, for God's sake, don't take it personally.

wow, i have heard of this happening before but i didn't think that anything you did or said would be considered not-hired worthy. especially since most of the things you addressed on the blog were also things you addressed with your former employer. that sucks.

i hope there are organizations out there that still respect the first amendment and will see your blog for what it is: your life and interactions with the people in it.
i still think it is great!

Same thing happened to me. I wrote a post about being burnt out at work, and then I didn't even know my boss knew I had a blog, but she read it and it got me in trouble. While I share the same feelings as you, sometimes it may just be better to not talk about work!
